ùwà!
an immersive multi-media environment installation piece
concept
Uwa will be an installation piece inside the Godine Gallery that will focus on creating a narrative environment that will tell a story through various art pieces that will also flesh out the characters and the world they inhabit. This project is inspired by my research into the theology and cosmology of various religions and culture’s that have inspired me as an artist throughout the years. Specifically, the Igbo people of Southern Nigeria, Haitian Voudou, and Catholicism. It also deals with themes such as collective consciousness, self vs other, and altered realities.
This will be executed by using projection, video art, sound, illustrations, and paper arts. Animated scenes of a fictitious origin myth I have created be projected inside the Godine Cube; it will sit near the back wall of the Godine Gallery. On the outside of the cube and on the walls will be a mixture of 2d illustrative art, handmade book/paper arts, and video art to supplement the cube and build the world. These pieces will mostly center on the main three characters seen in the origin myth. The sound will be multi-channel, and ambient. I decided upon sound and using multi-channel because I truly want the space to become a whole new world for viewers to be wrapped in.
The importance of immersion to me is because of how long I have wanted to make the characters and my drawings come alive in a way that still shares the same qualities of illustration.
The contents of these pieces are being created currently in the various classes I have this semester, and the main bulk of the animation is set to begin during the beginning of December.
Foreseeable issues will be how exactly the projectors will be hung inside the actual cube, if I would want three sides of inside the cube projected on; the the projectors would have to be a bit small and somehow attached to the roof of the cube.
